My July 2013 Income Report

August 2, 2013 in Goals, Income Reports

Welcome to my July 2013 income report! This is where I report how much I earn each month through my various online projects. I post my income reports here to keep track of my progress so I can look back and see how I’m doing on the goals I’ve set for myself this year.

Another Record Breaking Month!

July was a spectacular month! In fact, I hit another record and getting closer to reaching my goal of generating $1000/month (or $35/day) of passive income by the end of the year. The prior month (June) was my biggest earning month to date but I managed to surpass it this month! How did I do this? Every month, I try to build at least one online asset that will add passive income to my business in the future.

The main project I worked on this month was kind of a big one. In fact, I finished it just a day before the end of the month deadline. I didn’t know what type of project I was going to do so it wasn’t until about mid-July before I started on this project.

So what I did was create a new Udemy course. This course goes right in line with my goal of developing my first iPhone app this year. The course I created is called How to Create Top Ranking Mobile App Icons. It’s for app developers and graphic designers and includes a several Photoshop templates to make it easy to create great looking icons. With these templates, I can make a great looking icon in a couple of minutes. Keep reading for a special coupon to get 50% off the course!

I’m excited to get this course out there because in August, I plan to start work on my iPhone app. I’ve got my game plan and strategy worked out as I get ready to dive into the app business. For now, let’s get down to the income report.

Kindle Publishing

  • Total: $217.50
    • Last Month: $249.50
    • Difference (-$32.00)

My sales went down a bit but I’m still happy with the number of books sold. I literally do nothing with this account and it continues to be a great performer every month. However, if I want to grow the publishing side of my business, I really need to start publishing new books. The next set of books I’m going to try will be Kindle only and they will only be about 5000 words. I’ve seen the success people have had with smaller books so I will give it a try.

Amazon Associates

  • Total: $28.98
    • Last Month: $7.62
    • Difference: (+$21.36)

Back in June, I built a new niche site monetized by Amazon. This site was going up in rankings. It got as high as #20 but since then it has fallen off the chart. However, it has managed to squeeze out a few sales. Over the course of my business, I’ve found that building websites is less and less fun. Not to mention that I spend a lot of time building sites with very little return on investment. I think at this time, I’m going to take a break from building new websites and work on other projects that are more successful for me.

Nothing happening with Clickbank this month. At this point I have no plans to pursue additional income from Clickbank.

  • Total: $0.00
    • Last Month: $0.00
    • Difference: ($0.00)

I’m way more successful at other things in my business which means I will probably be eliminating Clickbank from my portfolio. I’m not surprised about having zero sales this month as this is the norm.

Banner Ads

This is the 2nd month in a row where I’ve broke the $100 barrier. This continues to be a totally passive income stream for me because I don’t have to do anything to earn it. At this point, it’s not going to make me rich but I do want to grow this part of my business. I’m happy just to maintain this level for now as I work on other projects.

  • Sites: $109.42
    • Last Month: $110.94
    • Difference: (-$1.52)
  • YouTube: $36.56
    • Last Month: $49.10
    • Difference: (-$12.54)

I’ve seen a slight increase in my banner ad earnings after I monetized my YouTube channels. Do you have more than one YouTube channel and want to learn how to monetize each of those channels with only one Adsense account? Here’s a post I wrote that explains the process in detail.

Google Affiliate Network

The Google Affiliate Network (GAN) is officially retired and gone forever. But for the last month that I was part of that network, I actually made some money with it. Now that it’s gone, the advertiser that was using GAN is switching over to Commission Junction. That means I’ll be signing up with them soon. It also means, I need to switch out the affiliate codes on my website and email autoreponders. This is the second time I’ve had to do this for this advertiser in about a year and a half. Hopefully their Commission Junction affiliation will stick around a lot longer.

  • Total: $65.00
    • Last month: $0.00
    • Difference: (+$65.00)

Again, the Google Affiliate Network is no more and this is the last report for them.

Createspace Publishing

For the first time in a few months, Createspace has dropped lower than my Kindle sales but not by too much. I’m glad I made the choice to offer books in print in addition to ebook format.

  • Total: $182.88
    • Last Month: $229.50
    • Difference: (-$46.62)

Traditionally, Createspace has always performed way better than Kindle sales. But what I earn from it is great because with just a little extra work, I can utilize the content from my Kindle books to create a secondary income stream easily.

Nook Press

My Nook Press account is still sitting there with no activity. I only have one book on there but nothing is happening with sales.

  • Total: $0.00
    • Last Month: $0.00
    • Difference: ($0.00)

I haven’t really tried to do anything about selling books at Barnes & Noble but for now, I have no more plans to publish here. I may come back to this in the future but I need to work on projects that actually make money.

Udemy received a jump in activity in July. A lot of it came from Udemy running their own coupon campaigns. Udemy pretty much offered everyone coupons for 75% off any course. So I didn’t make as much commission off of sales but I did have more sales volume though. My latest course is called How to Create Top Ranking Mobile App Icons and I’m experimenting with some marketing methods to hopefully get it in the New and Noteworthy section.

  • Total: $166.40
    • Last Month: $116.90
    • Difference: (+49.50)

I did try to promote one of my courses with AdWords advertising. I don’t have any experience with it but it didn’t bring in any sales. I can see that Adwords can become expensive really fast. Luckily, I was experimenting with some credits I had with Google.

Here’s a snapshot of my July totals for easy reference.

  • Kindle Publishing: $217.50
  • Amazon Associates: $28.98
  • Clickbank: $0.00
  • Banner Ads: $109.42
  • YouTube: $36.56
  • Google Affiliate Network: $65.00
  • Createspace: $182.88
  • Nook Press: $0.00
  • Udemy: $166.40

Total this month: $806.74

  • Last month total: $763.36
  • Difference: (+$43.38)

Total earnings per day: $26.03

  • Last month earnings per day: $25.45
  • Difference: (+$0.58)

I’m excited with the results in this income report. I have surpassed the $800 mark! And I would have been even higher except I got my first return on Udemy. I always feel bad when there’s a return on any of my products. I try to have high quality standards whenever I release a product but that’s the nature of this business.

What’s in Store for the Rest of the Year?

At this point, I really need to start working on my iPhone app. I’m really excited to get started so the next few months will be dedicated to this one goal. I’ve come up with a game plan and strategy that I will explain in one of my next App Dev article series. The very next thing I have to do is buy a Mac laptop. That will happen soon. I can’t guarantee that there won’t be any distractions along the way.

It’s just that sometimes I get pumped about something new I learn with often takes me in a different direction. I’ll try to keep that at a minimum as I work on my app project.

My Latest Udemy Course

Up until now, app development has just been fantasy in my mind. However, I’ve started working towards making my first app a reality. I’ve actually taken the first step already by creating app icon templates for my apps when I start to produce apps. To help other developers or graphic designers out, I created a course called How to Create Top Ranking Mobile App Icons that includes video tutorials and the exact icon templates I will be using for my apps.

That’s it for now. I never know if my income will be up or down but be sure to come back and get an update next month!
