My October 2013 Income Report

November 5, 2013 in Income Reports

Welcome to my October 2013 income report! This is where I total up how much I earn each month through my various online projects. I post my income reports here to keep track of my progress so I can look back and see how I’m doing on the goals I’ve set for myself this year.

Income Continues to Decline!

I was fairly busy in October working on my online business but my income has continued to fall again. I have a few things coming up that theoretically should bring my numbers up in the future. However, I just have to keep in mind that all my projects are built for long-term goals rather than quick, immediate returns. And if you’re building an online business like me, this is a harsh reality. I have to admit it’s tough to do a bunch of work only to see little or no return in the month or two that follows. But I’ve come to realize that over time, each thing I do contributes to my business as a whole. There’s really nothing that stands out in my portfolio that will make me a lot of money but with all my efforts combined, that’s where I see the gains.

App Development Delays Continue

At the beginning of September, I was all set to get my Apple Developer’s License and start working on my iPhone app but it was delayed. Now almost 2 months later, I still have not been accepted into the Apple Developer Program. My original issue was with my DUNS number because I’m registering as a company and not under my own name. I’ve been in contact with Apple Dev Support to resolve this issue but I really have seen little progress. Now we’re in November and I may not make the deadline I set for myself for releasing my first app this year. For a complete picture of what’s been going on, along with full updates on all my communications with Apple, read my App Dev 6 post. I will continue to update that post until I get into the Apple Developer Program.

Making More YouTube Videos

I love making videos! It’s what I do in my professional career and I love doing it for my own business. So I created 3 more videos for YouTube in October. One of them is my very first unboxing video. Don’t know what an unboxing video is? You can watch the video on this post Shot My First Product Unboxing Video for YouTube.

I mainly focus on making product review videos and I had just ordered some new camera gear that I can review. I can’t keep buying new products to review and in the past, I’ve borrowed products from friends to review but I think I need to find a consistent source of products. So I’m considering making that a goal for next year to contact companies and suppliers to see if they’ll send me their products to review.

In my experience, product reviews are great for generating YouTube income. Surprisingly, one of my best performing videos this year was a review on an corded electric lawn mower I bought during the summer. Who would’ve known?

My Next Book

I have been slow to put out any books this year. Last month, I hired a writer on Elance to write a new book for me. She actually hasn’t started yet but will finish it this month. I could’ve had this new book done in October but I knew she was the ideal writer for this new subject. So I gave her time to finish her current load of projects before working on mine. I wasn’t in a hurry so I kept this project flexible to fit her schedule.

I’m starting to work on the cover and description so it’ll be ready when the manuscript is done. By the way, I’m using my cover templates from my How to Create Bestselling Kindle Ebook Covers course on Udemy. It took me literally 5 minutes to create a high quality cover that looks like a professional designed it. If you look in the sidebar of my site, you’ll see that I’m offering a 50% discount to Freelance Doodle readers for this course.

One Last Thing

A new thing I did in October was to start promoting Udemy courses through their affiliate program. This has proven to be fruitful. As an affiliate, I receive 50% commission on every sale I generate through my links. There are so many subjects on Udemy to promote that almost anyone can find some sort of course to promote. In fact, I made almost as much in Udemy affiliate income as I did selling my own courses! Keep reading to see how this month turned out!

Only 2 Months Left in 2013 – What Now?

Now I’ve fallen under the $700 mark. I really need to hustle if I’m to complete my goal of $1000/month by the end of the year. I wanted to concentrate on my first iOS app but I may have to make some changes to my plan because of delays getting into the Apple Developer Program.

So I know I’ll have a new book published in November and I’ll keep making videos as part of my regular schedule. I may try to have one more book written by the end of the year. We’ll see! I’ll have a full report next month!

My Latest Udemy Course

I’m currently in the process of reskinning my first iOS app. But even before I owned a Mac,  I took the first step by creating app icon templates for my apps early on. To help other developers or graphic designers, I created a course called How to Create Top Ranking Mobile App Icons that includes video tutorials and the exact icon templates I will be using for my apps.
